If you’re a fight fan it might seem that you’ve heard the name Jorge Masvidal for ages; it’s simply because you have, he’s been around since his teenage years. Jorge started his fight career in the streets with the likes of Kevin ‘Kimbo Slice’ Ferguson, the one-time YouTube sensation, getting paid to fight whoever was willing in unsanctioned combat. From handheld video cameras to the oft shaky lens of regional promotions, Masvidal slowly gained fans and earned the respect of MMA’s more prominent promotion, Bellator, for delivering exciting fights that mostly ended with his opponents unconscious. In the spring of 2009 Masvidal entered Bellator’s Lightweight Tournament, winning his first fight by knockout in the first round. Masvidal made it to the semi-finals before succumbing to an inverted triangle choke from Toby Imada. Jorge primarily fought in the lightweight division but also accepted fights at a heavier catch-weight or at welterweight. After parting with Bellator, Masvidal moved to Shark Fights for a welterweight bout and then on to Strikeforce’s lightweight division. Masvidal remained in the lightweight division during the acquisition of Strikeforce by The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It’s somewhat surprising when you meet a professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter and their nickname matches with everything you come to learn about them. James ‘The Colossus’ Thompson is the embodiment of colossal; from his thickly muscled, large frame to his willingness in sharing his massive heart. Sitting rather primly in a chair positioned at the edge of the media room, James Thompson answered questions about his upcoming bout with Bobby Lashley, for Bellator’s Vengeance card in St. Louis Missouri, with good cheer and little fan fare.
Bellator Vengeance media day on November 4th, 2015 at the Center City Hotel in downtown St. Louis Missouri: David ‘Caveman’ Rickels picked the Patricio Freire and Daniel Straus match as the one that he is most looking forward to on the card, thinks Will Brooks will retain his belt after defeating Marcin Held, and declares Fedor Emelianenko as the best fighter in mixed martial arts and that he wants to see Fedor and Kevin ‘Kimbo Slice’ Ferguson fight on a Bellator card. Michael Chandler dropped an item on the floor of the media room while posing for pictures with a photographer. When Chandler bent at the waist to pick it up he visibly winced and told the photographer, “I bruised my rib so I’m still moving a little slow.” Chandler faces David ‘Caveman’ Rickels on Friday. This will be their second fight, the first fight ended with Rickels being knocked out 44 seconds into the first round. James ‘The Colossus’ Thompson declared that he and Kevin ‘Kimbo Slice’ Ferguson had unfinished business in the cage and after that he would be open to participating in a heavyweight tournament to determine a new Bellator Champion since more »
Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire is the current Bellator MMA Featherweight Champion. Over the last year Pitbull has emerged from his former code of silence with a vengeance. No longer willing to quietly wait for what is his due, he’s now making his will known, both inside and outside of the cage. I’m not the one starting things but I’ll definitely be the one to end it.”– Patricio Freire In September 2014, Freire forcefully snatched the oft-changing featherweight belt from Pat Curran, who had lost it to, and regained it from, Daniel Straus. So far this year Patricio has successfully stopped both challengers to his featherweight title; former champion Daniel Straus suffered a rear naked choke and Daniel Weichel was the recipient of a knockout punch. On November 6 at Bellator 145, Patricio is due to face Daniel Straus for a third time, the second for the title. Using Freire’s business manager as an interpreter, we were able to communicate with Patricio ahead of his title defense against repeat challenger Straus.
