- Jon Jones (43%, 32 Votes)
Total Voters: 74
At first glance this seems like a strange fight to make. Jon Jones is the most dominant Light Heavyweight champion in history and Chael Sonnen is a middleweight coming off of a brutal loss.
So how did Sonnen even get this this fight? Well there are two viewpoints on that.
The most popular is he talked his way into the shot. Chael has a big mouth, a bigger ego and possibly the biggest balls in the UFC.
At UFC 151, when Jones’ original opponent, Dan Henderson dropped out, Sonnen was the man to call Dana White to ask for the shot. Jones declined and this set up a story-line Dana could sell to the masses. Jones vs Sonnen was now PPV Gold.
That’s one view – here’s the other.
Sonnen hasn’t lost to anyone not named Anderson Silva since 2009. When he fought Anderson, widely regarded as the greatest mixed martial artist to ever live, he done two things no one else in the UFC ever had.
First he done EXACTLY what he said he would pre fight – he came forward throwing fire and raining brimstone, not only taking the champ down but punching him in the mouth on the feet for 5 straight rounds.
Secondly? He beat Anderson Silva for 23 minutes straight. Anderson lost more rounds in that fight than the rest of his UFC career combined.
Put simply, if there’s any man in MMA designed to upset dominant, unbeatable champions it’s Chael Sonnen. His mental game is beyond compare and his wrestling is perhaps the best functional MMA wrestling outside of Georges St Pierre.
Jon Jones, for all of his undoubted talents and physical tools is still a young guy, still inexperienced and still prone to being caught in precarious positions. His fight against Vitor Belfort, in which he was as much as a -1000 favourite almost ended in the first round when he was caught in a nasty armbar.
Jones managed to power out of it though. Just like he managed to figure out Lyoto Machida after one round. Just like he managed to overcome the mind games of Rashad Evans. Just like he managed to brutalize the undefeated Ryan Bader. Jon Jones ALWAYS finds a way to win and when your toolbox contains as many unique instruments of destruction as Bones’, that leads to a nigh-on untouchable warrior.
So who is your money on; The Gangster from West Lynn powering his way to a huge underdog upset on the road to redemption, or Jonny Bones crashing the party to keep his belt and undefeated streak intact?
